Vision

Our Christian-rooted vision of helping pupils to ‘Grow in Body, Mind and Spirit’ is reflected in all aspects of English. We do this by:

  • Fostering a life-long enjoyment of literature by offering diverse and engaging texts which provoke discussion and inspire creativity. We connect literature to real-life themes and students’ interests, helping them to grow in both mind and spirit.
  • Developing skills in reading and writing. Our reading and writing curricula are increasingly challenging, cementing the foundations established in KS2 and paving the way to the academic, scholarly styles needed for GCSE and beyond. Literacy is fundamental to functional adulthood so goes hand-in-hand with our pupils having the opportunity to experience ‘life in all its fullness.’
  • Encouraging pupils to use their voice for a range of purposes and audiences. Whether it is delivering a topical presentation or performing a role in a play, our children are explicitly taught oracy skills that will help them to become more articulate and capable speakers. We want them to be the ‘best they can be’ and part of this involves being able to self-advocate through speech.
  • Promoting creativity, empathy, and analytical thinking. Creation speaks not only to our minds but to our spirits, that’s why pupils are given many opportunities to be creative in English, whether it’s through imaginative or argumentative writing or through group activities and analysis.
  • Delivering a broad and balanced curriculum. The world in which we live is ever-changing. Our curriculum offers mirrors and windows into our global community, exposing pupils to multi-cultural and multi-faceted texts from a range of time periods.

Our English department is staffed by talented teachers who are all passionate subject specialists. At the heart of all we strive to do, we want pupils to enjoy and be enthusiastic about their English lessons so that they have a life-long love of learning and literature.

In a world of uncertainty and change, literature is the ever-present chronicling of the human experience. What more important subject could exist than a subject that timelessly influences and nurtures both our minds and our spirits?

Use your God-given gifts to their fullest: speak, read and write for the betterment not just of yourself but of the world around you.
