I am delighted to introduce St. Michael’s Church of England High School to you.  As a Church of England Academy within the Diocese of Blackburn, our values are rooted and grounded in the Christian faith.

We are very much a ‘team’ at St. Michael’s; staff, pupils, parents and governors work closely together to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to grow in body, mind and spirit; to flourish as a child of God and experience the joy and hope of ‘life in all its fullness’.

The highest expectations and aspirations are key features of our school life. This helps to create our vibrant learning community with pupils and staff demonstrating a real passion and zest for learning.

Serving God, pursuing excellence and celebrating the uniqueness of each individual are at the heart of our distinctive ethos as we strive to ‘be the best that we can be’.  We create and sustain our caring, Christian community by encouraging positive, supportive relationships, based on Christian values and striking a genuine balance between the highest academic standards and pupil progress and opportunities for personal growth and character development.

In 2024, our provisional GCSE results once again reflect outstanding levels of attainment by our pupils. The attainment 8 score was 59.6, meaning that the average GCSE grade was a grade 6. An amazing 92% of pupils achieved a pass at grades 9-4 in English and Mathematics and 78% achieved pass at grade 5 and above in English and Mathematics. Our Progress 8 score in 2023 was 0.49, indicating that pupil progress was above average and pupils attained almost half a grade higher in each subject than the national average, based on prior attainment.  The projected progress score for 2024 suggests that the progress of this cohort will be well above the national average, with positive progress for all significant groups of learners, including disadvantaged pupils, boys and pupils with special educational needs.

Our continued 'pursuit of excellence' has received further verification in our 'excellent' SIAMS inspection in November 2018 and a Quality Mark for Holocaust Education in March 2024 (the reports are available on our website). However, we are not complacent and continue to develop in an innovative way.

I hope that our website provides you with a flavour of the life and ethos of St Michael’s Church of England High School, but should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
