Vision

At St Michael’s, we are committed to helping all pupils thrive as historians, nurturing their growth in body, mind, and spirit. Our vision is to inspire a lifelong curiosity about the past and empower pupils to understand its relevance to the present and future.

We aim to:

  • Equip pupils with deep historical knowledge, enabling them to grasp the complexity and interconnectedness of past events, and understand how these continue to shape our local, national, and global contexts today.
  • Foster a strong understanding of key historical concepts, including continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity and difference, and significance. Through these, pupils learn to draw meaningful connections, identify patterns and contrasts, and analyse historical developments critically.
  • Promote rigorous historical enquiry, teaching pupils how to use evidence effectively, evaluate sources, and understand how and why different interpretations of the past are constructed.
  • Cultivate critical thinking and promoting courageous advocacy, encouraging pupils to ask thoughtful, challenging questions, assess differing viewpoints, and construct well-reasoned, coherent arguments with confidence.

Our history department is driven by a deep passion for the subject, which is reflected in our engaging lessons and rich curriculum. We are continually exploring new ways to share this enthusiasm—through educational visits, independent projects, and encouraging pupils to pursue their individual historical interests beyond the classroom.

We are especially proud of our leadership in Holocaust education at St Michael’s. As a UCL Centre for Holocaust Education Beacon School, we are committed to embedding meaningful Holocaust education not only within the history curriculum but across the wider life of the school.
