MICHAELMAS 1

(One double lesson and one single lesson/week for approximately 9 weeks)

In Year 8 pupils will experience learning in Art and Design that involves increasing levels of challenge. Pupils will explore the codes and conventions of Still Life. They will study a range of artists and their work and compare and contrast the different styles and approaches taken by each artist, including the history of still life. They will revisit core drawing skills making greater use of tone and tonal shading to create 3D effects. They will learn how to mix colours (including different tones and hues) when using paint and to refine their skills when applying paint to their designs. They will be expected to make greater use of technical vocabulary and use key words when they evaluate their work and that of others.

Pupils will:

  • Record observations from primary and secondary sources. Learn the importance of careful observation (to draw what they see and not what they think is there).
  • Study the work of some of following artists- Paul Cezanne, Sarah Graham, Canaletto, Georges Braque, Georgio Morandi, Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin, Vincent Van Gogh, Claus Oldenberg and Julian Beever.
  • Develop an understanding of how still life has developed over time.
  • Develop ideas – from initial ideas/research to planning a final piece of artwork for a 2D outcome.
  • Be encouraged to present work creatively in their sketchbooks.
  • Use sketchbooks to research, plan, develop and evaluate work.
  • Make use of thumbnail sketches and annotation.
  • Have the opportunity to develop and modify their designs in light of suggestions from others and their own reflections.
  • Study a range of different drawing techniques – for example, layered shading, cross hatching.
  • Study different painting techniques - mixing, blending and applying colours. Wet and dry painting techniques.
  • Study colour theory - primary/secondary/tertiary colours, mixing colours, complementary colours.
  • Study the principles of perspective (one and two point) and enlarging images using the grid method.
  • Compare, analyse and describe different ideas and approaches used by artists.
  • Use subject specific language and be expected to use keywords and art specific terminology in their annotations and evaluations.
