Art and Design forms part of the Technology Department.

The Technology Department is an enthusiastic and dedicated curriculum area of specialist teachers. We are committed to encouraging and developing creative flair and a passion for problem solving in our young people at St Michael’s.

Art and Design inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We want pupils to think critically and understand how art and design both reflects and shapes our history, and contributes to the culture and creativity of our nation.

Years 7, 8 and 9

In Year 7, 8 and 9  pupils follow a carousel system where they spend several weeks within in each of the following areas: Art, Design and Technology, Food Preparation and Nutrition and Textiles. The high-quality facilities enable all pupils to work to a professional standard, whatever the material or medium being used. The pupils have the opportunity to experience all areas before opting at the end of Year 8.

The Art and Design Department is located in two purpose-built art rooms. The rooms are light and spacious, giving the pupils an excellent working environment. The students have access to a wide range of materials and equipment.

In Years 7,9 and 9, pupils embark on a programme of study which covers a wide variety of disciplines including drawing, painting and collage. Students are introduced to a variety of artists and art movements and develop their skills through a series of mini projects.

The aim is to develop their observational drawing skills and confidence when using a range of different techniques and materials.

Creativity is encouraged and pupils work in sketchbooks to record information, develop their ideas and evaluate their work.

Wider Curricular: There is an Art Club for Years 7, 8 & 9.

Years 10 and 11

The examination board is AQA (www.aqa.org.uk). Pupils follow the Art and Design (Fine Art- 8202).

In Year 10 pupils continue to develop their ideas in their sketchbooks and work on their projects and portfolio.

In Year 11, pupils complete an externally set assignment which is a timed project responding to a chosen starting point.

Assessment is 60% Portfolio of Work and 40% Externally Set Assignment. At the end of the course all pupils present their work in a final exhibition.

Wider Curricular: GCSE Pupils are given the opportunity to visit the art rooms after school to develop coursework further, receive extra tuition or explore new techniques and ways of working.
